Dark Skies | film review

Today I watched the latest movie from Scott Stewart, Dark skies. So I thought I would share my thoughts and my overall opinion of the film. Just in case anyone hasn't heard of the film here is an outline from IMDB:
As the Barret family's peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, they come to learn that a terrifying and deadly force is after them.

The film is a Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller. I have to say when I heard that this film was from the creators of Paranormal Activity and Sinister I did immediately drop any expectation I had (I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover or a horror film by its producer but I couldn't help it). Apart for that, I literally went into this movie not knowing anything about the story or anyone else's opinion. I didn't even know who stared in it.

For the fist half an hour you kind of forget that it is a horror as it does get a bit boring. There is a lot of talkie bits and nothing major happens. I would say that towards the last half of the film things start to happen. If you haven't heard any other reviews of this film you might not know that this film has sooo many cliché horror moments it does get a bit unbearable (I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes while I was watching this film). Such as the creepy child drawing with crayon that many people have claimed was copied from the recent movie 'Mama' though even I (who is relatively new to the horror scene) have seen many films do this before.

As for the Acting, I was really impressed with Keri Russell I thought she was really convincing as a mother and I really did get sucked in to the story. I thought all of the family members were believable though a huge thing that happened in this film that really annoyed me was the character Edwin Pollard who (as in many other films with week story lines do) came into the story kind of randomly (I thought the fact that she just came across him on the internet and he happened to live up the road from them was really unrealistic) he just gave them all the answers and knew everything and basicly was just there to fill a massive gaping hole in the story.

Another thing that I hated about this film was that they didn't try to come up with another idea for the alien they just went along with the stereotypical alien (WHY?!) with the bright light and the huge head. I just don't understand, they had a great opportunity to make a really creepy alien and they didn't! *throws hands in the air*

I feel like this film would be a really good watch for any horror nerd (like myself) who just want a good film to watch. I think as soon as you start questioning things in the story you will start to find faults, though I kind of feel like the people who made this movie were hoping you aren't going to do that (hi there).

I gave this film a 6/10 on IMDB. If you have seen this film and want to share your opinion or just give a star rating please leave it in the comments.
